Next morning we wandered around the city trying to find a bus to Antigua. The bus system in Guatemala is crazy and confusing. Different bus companies are setup all over the city, servicing different parts of the country. I’m not sure, but I think that some or most of the buses are owned privately and the owner works on the bus and is super keen to get you on the bus.
Any how, some guy saw us walking with our backpacks and came up to us, “Antigua?”, “Si”. He took our packs off us and shuffled us onto the bus. He didn't work for the bus, but we soon found out that he had a Spanish school. We said we’d check it out and after the 1 hour, over crowded bus ride he took us there. We had a look around, US$140 a week including family stay, three meals a day. We said we’d think about it. Went to the official tourist centre, asked a guy who took us to another school (which obviously gave the best spotters fee) $116 per week. Back to the first school and got him down to US$120 which was a special deal for us and not to tell the other students. We found out that every student was on the special deal.
Got taken to our family stay, which turned out to be with the family of the guy that had got us onto the bus. Wife, 16 year old daughter (I wondered where the old man kept the shot gun), 5 year old son and 4 year old daughter. We got a room each, which I’m sure Rees was relived after putting up with my snoring the whole trip.
Settled into our rooms, had dinner with the family and called it quits, ready for an early start the next day at school.
